Learning to sail together can be a great way to start a new adventure. You’ll take the helm, handle sails, learn the routines of life aboard and discover what it takes to work as a crew.
For couples, a private sailing course also offers something especially useful: time to learn together, at a pace that suits you both. You can ask questions, practise new skills and build confidence without feeling you need to keep up with a larger group.
Sailing is a hands-on activity. There are sails to trim, lines to handle, directions to call and decisions to make. Both people can take part, and you’ll have opportunities to try different roles as you learn.
That doesn’t mean you need to have the same experience or feel equally confident from the start. One person might be keen to take the helm, while the other is more interested in navigation or learning how the yacht works. A private course gives you room to build on your strengths and practise the parts that feel unfamiliar.
Good communication is part of sailing, but it develops through practical experience. As you learn how to prepare for a manoeuvre, give clear instructions and work through each step together, you start to understand how the crew operates. Those skills are valuable whether you’re sailing for a weekend or planning longer trips in the future.
A private couples RYA course is tailored to your experience, goals and the course you choose, while following the relevant RYA syllabus. Your instructor can focus on the areas where you’d like more practice and help you build skills progressively.
Depending on the course, your training may include:
The aim is to help you understand what’s happening around you and become more capable on the water. You’ll learn by taking part, asking questions and practising skills onboard.
If you own a yacht, private tuition may be arranged aboard your own vessel. Learning on the boat you’ll use afterwards can help you get familiar with its equipment, systems and handling characteristics while building confidence as a team.
You can practise the routines that matter to your own sailing plans, from preparing for a passage to working out how you’ll manage manoeuvres together. If you’re planning a longer cruising adventure, let your instructor know. Your goals can help shape the training while the course still covers the required syllabus.
Mainstay Sailing’s private RYA training takes place in the Whitsundays, with departures from Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach. Learning here means taking your new skills out onto the water, with the islands and anchorages of the region as your surroundings.
The course is practical, but the experience is also a chance to spend time together away from everyday routines. You’ll share the learning, take on new challenges and enjoy the scenery between lessons.
Before booking, talk together about what you’d like to learn and how you hope to use your skills. You may be starting from scratch, refreshing your knowledge or preparing to take a yacht further afield. Your instructor can help identify a suitable course and discuss how private training could fit your experience and plans.
You don’t need to arrive as an experienced crew. You just need to be ready to get involved and learn. With time at the helm and practice working together, you can begin building the skills and confidence to sail as a team.
Mainstay Sailing offers private RYA training for couples, families and friends in the Whitsundays. Get in touch to discuss your experience, your goals and the course that could suit you both.
