That is what the RYA Competent Crew course is all about.

It is designed for complete beginners and for people who want to become useful, confident members of a sailing crew. You don’t need previous sailing experience, and you don’t need to arrive knowing the difference between a halyard and a sheet. You learn by getting involved. And in our view, that is the best way to learn to sail.

What is RYA Competent Crew?

The RYA Competent Crew course is an internationally recognised practical sailing course designed to introduce beginners to cruising yachts and the skills required to become an active member of the crew. The RYA describes it as a hands-on course where students learn through experience while living aboard a yacht. (⁠RYA)

At Mainstay Sailing, the course runs for 5 days and 5 nights, giving you plenty of time to become familiar with the yacht, the sailing environment and the daily routines of life at sea. And importantly, no previous sailing experience is required. You don’t have to arrive as a sailor. You arrive as someone who wants to learn.

So, what will you actually learn?

Competent Crew is much more than simply sitting on the rail and enjoying the view.

During the course, you’ll become involved in the practical running of the yacht and develop an understanding of how everything works together.

You’ll learn about:

• The parts of the yacht, rigging and sails
• Sailing terminology and basic seamanship
• Setting, handling and changing sails
• Using sheets, halyards and winches
• Essential knots and ropework
• Steering and helming the yacht
• Keeping a proper lookout
• Mooring and anchoring routines

• Man-overboard procedures
• Emergency equipment
• Fire precautions
• Weather and basic meteorology
• Seasickness and looking after yourself at sea
• General duties and life aboard a cruising yacht

The aim isn’t simply to memorise a list of sailing terms. It is to understand what is happening around you and become someone the skipper can rely on.

From passenger to crew

There is a big difference between being on a yacht and being part of a crew. As a passenger, you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. As crew, you start to understand why the skipper is watching the wind, why a sail needs trimming, why everyone has a job when coming alongside and why good communication matters. You begin to recognise the language of sailing. You learn where things are. You start anticipating what needs to happen next. And perhaps most importantly, you develop the confidence to get involved. That transition from passenger to crew member is one of the most rewarding parts of the Competent Crew experience.

Do I need to be fit or experienced?

One of the most common misconceptions about learning to sail is that you need to be young, extremely fit or already know something about boats.

You don’t.

The RYA Competent Crew course has no previous experience requirement, and the RYA recommends a minimum age of 12. (⁠RYA) What you do need is an open mind, a willingness to participate and a desire to learn. Sailing is a team activity, and everyone onboard has a role to play.

Why learn in the Whitsundays?

There are plenty of places around the world where you can learn to sail. But the Whitsundays is a pretty special classroom.

With more than 70 islands, sheltered anchorages, open-water sailing, changing conditions and spectacular tropical scenery, the region provides an incredibly varied environment for learning. One of the things that makes Competent Crew such a great introduction to sailing is that you don’t spend five days simply learning how to make a boat go faster.

What happens after Competent Crew?

For many people, Competent Crew is the beginning rather than the end. Once you’ve gained some experience as crew, you may decide that you’d like to take the next step and learn how to skipper a yacht yourself. That’s where courses such as RYA Day Skipper come in.

But don’t be tempted to rush the process. Good skippers are built on good foundations, and understanding what it means to be crew is an important part of becoming a capable skipper. The RYA itself places Competent Crew at the beginner level of its cruising pathway, with Day Skipper moving into the skipper-focused stage.
