For many sailors, there comes a moment when sailing becomes more than just a weekend activity. The desire grows to explore further, skipper with greater confidence, and take responsibility for a yacht in a wider range of conditions.
This is where the RYA Coastal Skipper course begins.
Designed for sailors who already have a solid foundation of practical sailing skills, the RYA Coastal Skipper qualification develops the knowledge, decision-making and skippering ability required to confidently plan and undertake coastal passages.
At Mainstay Sailing, we believe becoming a skipper is not just about gaining a certificate — it is about building the confidence to make good decisions on the water.
The journey is not about learning to control a yacht. It is about learning to lead one.
The RYA Coastal Skipper course is one of the most rewarding steps in the RYA pathway. It sits between the RYA Day Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster qualifications, focusing on developing sailors who want to take command of a yacht and navigate coastal waters independently.
While the RYA Day Skipper course introduces the fundamentals of skippering, Coastal Skipper takes those skills further by introducing more complex passages, night sailing, advanced navigation and greater responsibility for the yacht and crew.
This is where sailing changes. You stop simply following instructions and begin making decisions. You learn to assess conditions, plan passages, manage your crew and think several steps ahead. In many ways, this is where sailors begin to think like skippers.
During the course, you will develop practical skills in:
Learn how to prepare and execute longer coastal passages, taking into account:
Build confidence using both traditional and electronic navigation methods, including:
Refine your boat-handling skills in a variety of situations, including:
A great skipper is not simply someone who can sail a boat — they are someone who can make the right decisions.
You will develop skills in:
The Whitsundays provide one of the world’s most beautiful and challenging sailing environments. With over 70 islands, changing tides, coral reefs, narrow passages and varying weather conditions, the region provides the perfect classroom for developing real-world skippering skills.
Rather than learning in a predictable environment, you will experience the decisions that real skippers make every day:
“Where is the safest anchorage?”
“How will the tide affect our passage?”
“What does the weather mean for our plan?”
These are the skills that create confident skippers.
At Mainstay Sailing, our aim is not simply to help you pass an assessment.
We want you to leave the course with:
A license opens the door, but experience and good judgement are what make a skipper.
A certificate demonstrates what you have learned. Good judgement demonstrates what you have become.
For many sailors, the RYA Coastal Skipper course is an important milestone towards the prestigious RYA Yachtmaster qualification.
It is where knowledge becomes experience, and where sailors begin to develop the mindset required to take command.
The journey is not about learning to control a yacht. It is about learning to lead one.
The RYA Coastal Skipper course is designed for sailors who have already developed a good foundation of sailing skills and are ready to take greater responsibility onboard.
It is ideal for sailors who have completed RYA Day Skipper or equivalent training and want to progress towards longer passages, more challenging conditions and greater independence.
Every experienced skipper remembers the moment when sailing stopped being about simply handling a boat and became about understanding the sea, anticipating change and leading with confidence. The RYA Coastal Skipper course is designed to help you reach that moment. Whether your goal is to charter yachts around the world, cruise Australia's spectacular coastline or continue your journey towards RYA Yachtmaster, the RYA Coastal Skipper course is where knowledge becomes experience—and experience becomes confidence.
At Mainstay Sailing, we believe the best way to develop as a skipper is through real experience. Our Coastal Skipper voyages allow students to apply their knowledge in the real sailing environment of the Whitsundays, where weather, tides, navigation and decision-making all become part of the journey.
