(Translated by Google) It seems like a great sailing school (judging by the good reviews), but unfortunately, it was a very different experience during our booked 3-day tour to the Whitsunday Islands. What went very well was the communication beforehand, the skipper (thanks Nick!) and the crew, and learning to sail (very fun to do!). What didn't go well? Basically everything else, and especially the communication from Mainstay Sailing itself. Unfortunately, they don't take you seriously when something goes completely wrong. A week before we were supposed to sail, very bad weather was forecast. Especially (very) much wind, far too much to sail comfortably in (25 - 30+ knots). That is why we asked Mainstay Sailing if it wouldn't be wiser to reschedule to a later time. Their answer? 'Don't worry about the weather'. So we trusted them and went ahead with it. What happened? On Day 1, we sailed from the harbor to Nara Inlet to take shelter there from the strong wind (25+ knots). Maybe it would clear up a bit tomorrow. It is a beautiful spot in itself, but it is a shame that we couldn't sail for the rest of the day because of it. On Day 2, we were supposed to sail to South Mole and Hamilton Island. After about 45 minutes of sailing, things already went wrong. The head sail tore slightly at first, and then completely. The wind was much too strong (27+ knots). So we had to return to the harbor at Airlie Beach. We were able to continue by mid-afternoon. But skipper Nick indicated that he definitely didn't want to sail to the Whitsunday Islands anymore. The wind didn't allow it. So we sailed for an hour to a small bay around the corner, on the mainland. Day 3? Motored back to the harbor at Airlie Beach. It happens; you can't influence the weather. But it was predicted. And Mainstay Sailing's reaction? 'Oh, there is often wind here.' Even though the head sail tore, causing Day 2 to be ruined because we had to return to the harbor. And on day 1 we sailed for a few hours, and on day 3 we couldn't sail at all. So should you let a trip like this go ahead in these circumstances? It's a shame, because they advertise a 3-day sailing trip past 'all the highlights of the Whitsunday Islands'. We saw exactly 0 of those highlights. Even though we indicated beforehand (during the period when we were allowed to cancel for free) that we had doubts about the weather. We made the best of it with Nick and the crew. But Mainstay seems very poorly prepared to organize tours to the Whitsunday Islands. And perhaps worst of all for us, they don't take you seriously at all as a customer. Not even if you book their most extensive 3-day tour. Which, in our case, lasted from day 1 at 10:00 AM to day 3 at 12:00 PM. Of which a total of a few hours of sailing. It can all happen, and you can't influence the weather. But you decide for yourself how to deal with it when you charge customers so much money. When we called them over the phone after the sail had torn, we couldn't even manage a 'sorry' or 'how annoying'. Instead, they told us that it was mainly annoying for them, because a sail like that is very expensive. Mainstay did not take our questions seriously at any point and basically laughed at us a little. 'It can happen,' they say. 'You did go sailing, didn't you?' So check the weather carefully yourself and cancel if it is still free, because they were unwilling to accommodate us in any way later on. Looking back, we think we should have cancelled. But we really wanted to trust their judgment that everything would work out. And we didn't think it was polite to cancel just a few days before the trip. A hard lesson; we know better from now on. Perhaps look beyond Mainstay if you are looking for a nice tour. Or try booking directly with skipper Nick, so to speak. Halfway through, he told us: 'I would have offered you this trip for free, but Mainstay operates differently.' It is all very unfortunate. Moreover, we didn't want to post this review. But Mainstay isn't responding to any of our questions or requests, so we're sharing our experience here anyway.

Couldn’t recommend more highly! Did the RYA Day Skipper course in May 2026. A beautiful part of the world and an excellent holiday - and we learnt so much, Terence was an excellent teacher, very invested in teaching us to be safe and confident sailors, and took us to some spectacular spots around the region too. If you’re looking for a skippered charter experience or to complete a course and improve your sailing, you won’t be disappointed with Mainstay. We will definitely recommend to friends and look to come back to do our Coastal Skipper cert and beyond.

My partner and I just did our RYA day skipper practical with Mainstay Sailing in May and it was superb! Terrance is a 5 star sailing instructor - he is patient, a very good teacher, and has so much sailing experience to draw on and share. He is also so friendly and happy to chat about his very interesting life experiences, and is an excellent cook catering so effortlessly for us vegetarians. We really appreciated how we were so well looked after and how much we got to learn - and in between it all we found time to do some snorkelling and exploring a couple of islands by foot. Thank you for an awesome week of learning experiences in the whitsundays! Hopefully we’ll be back in a few years with a small sailor by our side :)

(Translated by Google) I highly recommend Mainstay Sailing's sailing lessons. Unlike other sailing lessons, Mainstay offers a dual experience of learning to sail and a vacation. Learning about sailing while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands is truly fulfilling. Nick took excellent care of us, taking us to many snorkeling spots and secluded beaches. As overseas tourists, Ron's prompt replies were always reassuring. If you have a more flexible schedule, consider a proper sailing experience instead of a touristy sunset sailing trip.

The course was practical, hands-on and very well run from start to finish. Highly recommend Mainstay Training to anyone heading offshore or wanting to build real confidence on the water.

FAQ's

Who is the RYA?

The Royal Yachting Association is the national body for dinghy, yacht and motor cruising, all forms of sail racing, RIBs and sports boats, windsurfing and personal watercraft and a leading representative for inland waterways cruising.

Our internationally renowned training schemes steer 250,000 yacht sailors, power boaters, small craft leisure boaters, windsurfers and canal boaters towards confident and successful boating every year.

So whether your end goal is to spend more quality down time on the water, to travel, to compete, to work, or to advance your career; there’s a course for you.

ICC | International Certificate of Competence

An ICC (International Certificate of Competence) assessment is a practical and theoretical test for boaters, proving competence for sailing in countries requiring formal qualifications, covering safety, navigation, rules, pilotage, and boat handling (power/sail), often based on RYA standards, with experienced sailors able to take a shorter assessment or convert existing qualifications.

What it covers:
Safety:
Onboard procedures and emergency situations.
Rules & Regulations: Collision avoidance (COLREGs) and maritime rules.
Navigation & Pilotage: Chart work, buoyage, and coastal navigation.
Boat Handling: Under power and sail, including close-quarters maneuvering and berthing.
Man Overboard: Recovery procedures.

How to get it:
Convert Existing Qualifications:
If you hold a recognised RYA qualification (like Day Skipper), you can apply to convert it.
Take an Assessment: For experienced boaters without formal certification, a one-day practical and theoretical assessment is available.
Take a Course: You can take an RYA training course (like Day Skipper) and then apply for the ICC.

Key Points:
It's a certificate of competence, not a qualification itself, providing assurance to foreign authorities. An RYA Essential Navigation course is recommended for theory. You might also need a VHF Marine Radio license.
