The RYA’s Seven Common Senses are a simple set of basic safety reminders designed to help sailors plan and enjoy their time on the water more safely and confidently. They support good decision‑making before and during a sailing trip.
1. Equipment suitability:
Ensure your boat, gear and personal safety equipment (e.g., proper clothing, buoyancy aids or lifejackets) are appropriate, well‑maintained, and in good condition.
2. Tell someone your plan:
Let a responsible person know where you’re going and when you expect to return, and carry a reliable means of communication like a mobile phone or VHF/PLB.
3. Check the forecast:
Always check the weather forecast and tide/current information in advance, and seek local advice if unfamiliar with an area.
4. Match conditions to ability:
Be honest about your experience and limits — only set out in conditions you and your boat are capable of handling.
5. Sail with others:
Avoid going out alone; having others nearby increases safety and support if anything goes wrong.
