There are plenty of beautiful places to begin a sailing adventure. But when your destination is the Whitsundays, there is something rather special about setting off from Coral Sea Marina.

Located just a short walk from Airlie Beach, Coral Sea Marina sits right on the edge of the Coral Sea, with the Whitsunday Islands stretching out beyond the entrance. For us at Mainstay Sailing, it is more than simply the place where we keep our yachts.

It is where the adventure begins.

A marina built for the Whitsundays

Today, Coral Sea Marina is one of Australia’s leading marina destinations, with 520 wet berths accommodating vessels from smaller recreational boats right through to yachts and superyachts up to 80 metres.

But it wasn’t always this way.

The marina was acquired in 2013 by Paul Darrouzet, who had a vision to transform what was then a tired and run-down marina into a world-class destination. Over the following decade, substantial investment and redevelopment completely changed the precinct.

The result is what we see today: a modern marina, resort, restaurants, marine services and tourism businesses all centred around one of Australia’s greatest sailing playgrounds.

The marina itself describes the transformation as becoming the “beating heart of the Whitsundays” – and when you spend time here, it is easy to understand why.

More than somewhere to park a yacht

For sailors, a good marina is about much more than a berth.

Of course, the practical things matter. Coral Sea Marina provides water, power, fuel facilities, private amenities, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi and pump-out services. There is also a dedicated team providing marina and concierge services.

But it is the atmosphere that makes the difference.

The marina village has restaurants, cafés, marine businesses and tourism operators right on the waterfront. There is somewhere to have breakfast before heading out, somewhere to enjoy a cold drink after returning from the islands and plenty of places to watch the boats come and go.

For visiting sailors, there is also the Ocean Club – a floating guest facility with private bathrooms, laundry facilities, a waterfront sundeck, BBQ facilities and Wi-Fi.

And if you have been at sea for a few days, having access to a hot shower and a comfortable place to sit down with a coffee is a surprisingly important part of the experience!

And then there are the sunsets…

One of the things we love about Coral Sea Marina is that you don’t have to go far to enjoy the Whitsundays.

The marina itself looks out towards the islands, and the waterfront restaurants provide some excellent places to sit back and watch the afternoon light.

Sorrento Bar & Restaurant in the north marina village has expansive views across the marina and towards the Whitsunday Islands, while The Garden Bar Bistro in the south marina village is another favourite for an afternoon drink, dinner and sunset.

And for those arriving or departing on one of our sailing adventures, the location is particularly convenient. You’re close enough to Airlie Beach to enjoy everything the town has to offer, while the yacht is sitting right there waiting for you.

The gateway to the Whitsundays

This is really what makes Coral Sea Marina special.

Step aboard your yacht and, before long, the mainland begins to disappear behind you.

Ahead lies an extraordinary sailing playground: 74 islands, secluded anchorages, coral reefs, beaches, bays and some of the most beautiful cruising waters in Australia.

Depending on the conditions and the itinerary, you might find yourself sailing through Hook Passage, exploring Nara Inlet, anchoring in a quiet bay, snorkelling over coral or simply dropping the sails and enjoying the silence.

That is the beauty of sailing the Whitsundays.

There is no single way to experience them.

And Coral Sea Marina puts you right at the starting line.

A marina with a story

We think the story behind Coral Sea Marina is worth knowing.

The transformation began with a vision to create not simply a better marina, but a better place for people to visit, work and live. Environmental stewardship, tourism, marine services and the visitor experience have all formed part of that development.

Today, the marina is recognised as a 5 Gold Anchor Platinum marina and has received numerous national and international awards. Most recently, it was named Superyacht Facility of the Year in 2026.

That recognition is important, but ultimately a marina is judged by the experience it provides.

For us, it is the combination of location, facilities and atmosphere that makes Coral Sea Marina such an important part of sailing in the Whitsundays.

Where Mainstay Sailing begins

Every time we leave Coral Sea Marina, we are reminded how fortunate we are to call the Whitsundays our sailing ground.

Our yachts are ready, the sails are waiting and the islands are just over the horizon.

For those joining us for an RYA sailing course, Coral Sea Marina is where your learning begins. For guests joining us for a private sailing adventure, it is where you step aboard, leave the everyday behind and start exploring the Whitsundays under sail.

And perhaps that is the best thing about Coral Sea Marina.

It isn’t really the destination.

It’s the beginning of the journey.

So next time you’re walking along the marina, take a moment to look beyond the yachts, across the Coral Sea and towards the islands.

Your Whitsunday adventure is waiting out there.
