Drug, Smoking and Alcohol Policy
This document outlines our policies and procedures for smoking, vaping, drugs and alcohol on board our vessels:
Policy for Skippers, Crew and Instructors:
Smoking and Vaping:
The skipper, instruction or crew member is not to be seen smoking or vaping on board at any time. If they must smoke or vape it should be done away from the boat and never in front of guests or students.
When applying for work with Mainstay, we have a policy of not employing smokers and vapers. If in your application, you state that you are not a smoker or a vapour and we discover you are we will terminate your work immediately.
Alcohol consumption:
When the vessel is operating as a commercial vessel i.e. training or charter percent the skipper is required bylaw to have a 0 percent blood alcohol reading. This includes when the vessel is at anchor. All alcohol consumption is discouraged even while not on the vessel however the RYA makes allowance FOR a conservative amount of alcohol once training is completed for the day. Remember that if there is any incident the skipper will be breathalysed and more than likely blood tested body authorities and at very least any over the limit result will result in loss of licence or conviction.
All other crew members must always remain below 0.05% while on duty.
One of the skippers or master's responsibilities is to ensure that nobody on board is inebriated and a risk to themselves the vessel or others, that means if you allow others to get drunk you are liable. This includes people who arrive at the boat already inebriated.
These can be very difficult rules to enforce, and they often result in unhappy guests, so we need to handle them with caution.
We are governed by a number of outside policies including the Marina code of conduct which clearly states that no alcohol is to be consumed on the Marina docks, no drunk operators crew or passengers will be tolerated within the Marina confines, consumption of alcohol on your own vessel is allowed as long as the people are not making noise or swearing or behaving badly.
Use of drugs, narcotics and substance abuse:
Any prescription drugs must be declared prior to any training courses.
Use of any narcotics or recreational drugs is strictly forbidden on board, and anyone caught doing this will be removed from the vessel and no refund will be offered.
Anybody entering the Marina precinct can be subjected to random drug and alcohol testing the Marina management at the discretion of.
