Common Senses for Safe Sailing

RYA’s Seven Common Senses for Safe Sailing

The RYA’s Seven Common Senses are simple, practical safety reminders for anyone heading out on the water. They help sailors plan and enjoy their trips with better preparation, awareness, and decision‑making.

  1. Check your equipment: Make sure your boat, gear, and personal safety equipment (like lifejackets) are suitable, well‑maintained, and fit correctly before going out.
  2. Tell someone your plan: Always let a responsible person know where you are going, when you’ll be back, and carry a reliable way to keep in touch, such as a phone or VHF/PLB.
  3. Check the forecast: Look at weather and tidal information in advance and seek local advice if you’re sailing in unfamiliar areas.
  4. Match conditions to ability: Be honest about your level and only go out in conditions you and your crew can handle safely.
  5. Sail with others: Avoid going out alone; having other boaters nearby increases safety and support if needed.
  6. Avoid tricky conditions: Strong tides, offshore winds, and poor visibility can become dangerous, so avoid them when possible.
  7. Respect other water users: Be aware of and give space to other people on the water, follow local rules, and steer clear of collisions.
